Your number are 10 altogether. You pull : 40 passengers from the icy depths and you have just enough food, drink, and : protection from the elements for the present survivors now aboard. : Yet there are 60 people in the water, some clining to the wreckage, some : merely floundering as their strength is exhausted. You succumb to the : humanitarian impulse, and pull five more aboard. The gunwale dips perilously : close to the placid yet icy depths, and as it does, you feel the beginnings : of a breeze, which increases until it is a rather stiff wind. : How humanitarian do you feel, sir? Are you humanitarian enough to bring : another five aboard? -another ten, another 20? The winds are rising sir, and : each person you "rescue" only lowers the gunwale closer to the reaching : waves... which are reaching higher with the gathering storm. : How humanitarian are you, sir? Are you such a humanitarian that you will say : "enough, we can hold no more" and thus assure the mere possibility of : survival to those on the already-overloaded lifeboat? Or are you so inhumane : as to give way to your emotions and draw a few more aboard to capsize the : lifeboat so that _all_ must share a soggy death and a deep and watery grave? : Or are you man enough to save who you may, and weep for those for whom there : can be no salvation unless they can somehow stay afloat themselves until : rescue will arrive? : In short sir, are you man enough to save who can be saved and let the rest : fend for themselves? Or are you a callow fool who will jeopardize _all_ so : that you can feel maudlin and democratic and willing to share one, share : all, when the sharing is only of Death? : What kind of a man _ARE_ you, sir? He is an incompetent captain. : I am no bigot, sir, I am quite humanitarian. But my humanitarianism must : perforce be bestowed upon those who have a chance to survive. I will not : capsize my lifeboat, my Nation, to rescue those who came late in their : flight from the rising storm. America is in fact a lifeboat in a raging sea : and the simple fact of the matter is that we are full. : As you say, sir, they're not the antichrist. They just, to extend the : allegory, want to be out of the ocean. But it they come aboard, they will : sink us all. : It's time to repel boarders. : Let's batten down the hatches and close the borders NOW. That is so perfect, but we can actually see the lifeboat effect in action: California's blackout bullshit. Forget the politics for a moment with the eco-nuts and no added powerplants. You are the dictator and your power grid has finite capacity. But you are an engineer and/or advisors are telling you that a rash of permanent blackouts is possible becuse of excessive load. You have to shed load and there are millions of illegal aliens each imposing load. Meanwhile, population would be steady were it not for immigration. What do you do? You cannot add capacity. Do you keep adding people? Adding people with the result of adding load starts to make your grid vunerable. Do you risk an entry into the Dark Ages by continued immigration and the grid crashing in a wave of permanent blackouts? THIS IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING!
