Mike Matthews Reporting
FBI Looking Into Death of Memphis Woman
Email story to a friend

The lady who lived at 400 Boston Road was virtually invisible. She didn't talk much...kept to herself. Nobody here thought Katherine Smith was selling drivers licenses for cash at the Division of Motor Vehicles. Not to mention dealing with illegal Middle Eastern Aliens. Mattie Cato lives across the street from Smith and says "She didn't seem like that type of person."

According to legal papers...the FBI got word that illegal aliens from the Middle East would be heading from New York City to Memphis on February 5th. They were planning on buying drivers licenses for 1-thousand dollars apiece. Katherine Smith was identified by a confidential informant as the person who sold the informant a license a few months ago. The five men and Smith were arrested by agents on the 5th. And Saturday night, less than 48 hours before she was due in court, Smith's body was found in her car on Highway 72 in Fayette County. She'd been burned beyond recognition. Lieutenant Zane Smith of the Tennessee Highway Patrol says "We will be working hand in hand to try to come to a consensus agreement on this matter."

Investigators want to know what happened to Smith...and it's important to remember September 11th. Because on September 11th, several of the men who were involved with the murders of 3-thousand people were illegal aliens...with bogus drivers licenses. Lieutenant Smith says, when looking at Katherine Smith's accident "This particular crash carries some of the possibilities of these implications." And when asked whether those implications concerned action by some outside group, Smith said "Possibly, yes."

Those who knew Katherine Smith say this is hard to understand. Smith worked two jobs, according to a neighbor. She spent her days at the Drivers License Bureau, and then took care of an elderly woman, who was in bad health, at night. FBI investigators have Smith's car, and are searching it for clues. Special Agent Phil Thomas says he's not going to talk about this case until there's something to talk about...and right now, his investigation is continuing. Three of the Middle Eastern Suspects are scheduled to be U.S.District Court in Memphis on Wednesday afternoon. At least one of the "Big 3" networks is giving indications that they will be in Memphis Wednesday, to cover this story. For neighbors, the mystery is a far more personal thing. Mattie Cato has lived on Boston Street since 1946. She's seen a lot of things happen, but Katherine Smith's death just doesn't make any sense to her. "She seemed to be a nice person," Smith said. "She was quiet, kind of quiet. I just wonder what happened."

In Memphis, Mike Matthews, News Channel 3.
