Psychiatric Links
We live in a crazy world. Isn't it nice to know that even those of us who
are too geekly to ever log off of the InterNets (mostly because we're too
insecure to go outside and have our clothing laughed to scorn) can seek
professional help right here, without ever having to leave our terminals?
But psychiatry is supposed to be about interpersonal interaction isn't it?
Well, for some of us, this is as close as we get to interacting with people.
I guess it's better than being shot full of some disgusting psychochemical
and being left to rot on the warehouse shelf.
- Psychiatric
Disability, Employment, & the Americans with Disabilities Act. This
seminal paper from the sadly-defunct Office of Technology Assessment is
loaded with advice, legal opinion and hyperlinks all around cyberspace.
- American Psychiatric Press. "The Prime Site for
Insight". Lots of links.
- American Psychological Association.
Loaded with links and information!
- Anorexia Nervosa and Related Eating
Disorders (ANRED) - a group which provides information about eating
disorders such as anorexia and bulemia.
- The Bazelon Center.
" The Judge David L. Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law
is a nonprofit legal advocacy organization based in Washington D.C. Our name
honors the federal appeals court judge whose landmark decisions pioneered
the field of mental health law, and our advocacy is based on the principle
that every individual is entitled to choice and dignity. For many people
with mental disabilities, this means something as basic as having a decent
place to live, supportive services and equality of opportunity.
"
- Citizens' Commission on
Human Rights. This is a must-see. The opening quote is included here
because of the power of the quotation - and also it to some degree
summarizes the fears of the potentials for abuse of power by the priests of
the only State Religion:
-
"...The 19th Century ridicule of their kind
[psychiatrists] had died out. By vast pretensions and lies they had worked
themselves into a towering position of power and authority...
-
"They dreamed of being the philosopher kings of Plato with the power of life
and death over every man, woman and child on the planet. They had been
fantastically successful as far as they went. They had infiltrated and
influenced every law making body and government in the world. They had
effected legislation entitling them to seize, injure or kill any person
anywhere. They dominated education and had intimidated medicine..."
(sadly enough, this quote is from L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of the Church of Scientology.)
Do be advised that this site is considered by many to be a Scientology front
organization.

Rights & Psychiatry. This page is put together by a group of
"psychiatric survivors". Interesting reading, for sure.

Electroconvulsive Shock Therapy Page. Chilling.
